Key Players to Watch
Achraf Hakimi (Captain)
Hakimi is Morocco’s most experienced player at this tournament and the captain of the side. The Paris Saint-Germain right-back is the driving force of everything Morocco do going forward. He pushes into attack with pace and directness, then tracks back with discipline. He won the Champions League with PSG this season and arrives as one of the best full-backs in world football. Every dangerous move Morocco make is likely to start or involve his flank.
Brahim Diaz
Diaz is the creative engine of Morocco’s attack and the player most likely to unlock defences in tight situations. He plays for Real Madrid and chose to represent Morocco rather than Spain. At AFCON 2025 he was the tournament’s top scorer with five goals in five games, announcing himself on the biggest stage. His ability to find space and deliver in key moments makes him Morocco’s most dangerous attacking threat.
Yassine Bounou
Bounou was outstanding at Qatar 2022, most memorably saving two penalties in the shootout victory over Spain. Now at Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, the 34-year-old brings the kind of big-game experience that a squad under a new coach needs. His leadership between the posts gives Morocco a reliable foundation even when the team is under pressure.
Bilal El Khannouss
At 22, El Khannouss is one of the most exciting young midfielders in the squad. He plays for VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga and combines technical quality with intensity and vision. Ouahbi worked with him in the youth setup and is likely to give him a significant role. If Morocco are to play an attacking style under their new coach, El Khannouss will be central to it.
Ayoub El Kaabi
El Kaabi is Morocco’s most direct goal threat from a central position. He plays for Olympiacos in Greece and was the leading scorer in Morocco’s CAF qualifying group. If Morocco are to progress beyond the group stage, they will need him to take his chances when they come.
Head Coach: Mohamed Ouahbi
Ouahbi took over as head coach after Walid Regragui left in March 2026, three months before the tournament began. The appointment raised eyebrows because most of Ouahbi’s career had been in youth football. However, his track record at that level was exceptional. He led Morocco’s under-20 side to the U20 World Cup title in 2025, making them only the second African nation in history to win the competition. He beat Argentina in the final.
His familiarity with several younger players in this squad is an advantage. The question is whether the tactical discipline and defensive organisation that defined Regragui’s Morocco can be maintained under a coach who has never managed a senior side before. His first test comes against Brazil.
Morocco’s Group C Fixtures
Morocco are in Group C alongside five-time world champions Brazil, Scotland and Haiti.
| Date | Match | Venue |
| June 13 | Morocco vs. Brazil | MetLife Stadium, New Jersey |
| June 19 | Morocco vs. Scotland | Gillette Stadium, Foxborough |
| June 24 | Morocco vs. Haiti | Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta |
The Brazil match on June 13 is the defining fixture of their group stage. Morocco showed at Qatar 2022 that they can contain and beat elite opposition by defending deep and hitting on the counter. Scotland and Haiti represent the more achievable points, but Morocco will know that nothing is guaranteed at a World Cup.
Morocco’s World Cup History
This is Morocco’s seventh FIFA World Cup appearance. Their best result came at Qatar 2022, where they became the first African and Arab nation to reach the semi-finals, eliminating Spain and Portugal along the way before falling to France. That run transformed expectations around Moroccan football and made the Atlas Lions one of the most watched teams at any tournament they enter.
Before 2022, Morocco had reached the last 16 only once, at the 1986 tournament in Mexico. The jump from 1986 to a semi-final in 2022 illustrates how far the team has come in a generation.
