France Ligue 1 or Ligue 1 Uber Eats as it is sponsored by them, is the top division professional football league in France.

France Ligue 1 consists of 20 teams that each play twice against each other from August till May.

The top three teams in France Ligue 1 qualify for the Champions League, the first two directly proceed to the Champions League group stage, whereas the third team enters the qualifying round.

Fourth place qualifies to UEFA Europa League and the fifth for UEFA Europa Conference League.

The last four teams are relegated to Ligue 2.

France Ligue 1 was founded in 1932 under the name ”National” when the National Council of the French Football federation voted in favor of adopting a professional football league in the country.

There were twenty clubs allowed to enter and entrants needed to have had positive game results in the past, enough revenue, and must be able to recruit at least eight professional players.

Saint-Étienne was founded in 1933, their home ground is Stade Geoffroy-Guichard, which is based in Saint-Étienne in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France.

They are known as ”Les Verts” or the Greens. They have a rivalry with Olympique Lyonnais, the club from the nearby Lyon.

The beginnings of the club go back to 1919 when employees in a Saint-Étienne-based grocery store chain called Groupe Casino.

They adopted the color green because it was the primary color of Groupe Casino.

However, their period of dominance is long gone as the last time they won the France Ligue 1 was in 1981

Olympique de Marseille is based in Marseille, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur. The club was founded in 1899 and their home ground is Stade Stade Vélodrome which holds the capacity of 67,394 spectators.

In 1997, a Franco-Swiss businessman purchased the club, but following his death in 2009, his widow became the club’s majority shareholder. In 2016 an American businessman called Frank McCourt bought the club from her.

Originally, the club was founded in 1892 by a French Sports official named René Dufaure de Montmirail.

Rugby Union was more important to the club than football . It was until 1902, that football began to be played at Olympique de Marseille.

AS Monaco

Based in Fontvieille, Monaco, which is not in France, AS Monaco, however, is part of the French Football Federation.

It was founded in 1918 and their home ground is Stade Louis II. Their training ground, however, is in La Turbie in France.

Despite the fact that they are not French, AS Monaco is considered one of the most successful clubs in France.

The club is known as Les Rouge et Blanc (The Red and Whites).
